Every fall, one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles on the planet takes place over the Strait of Gibraltar. Millions of birds—birds of prey, storks, flamingos, and hundreds of other species—cross the narrow strait between Europe and Africa on their journey to their sub-Saharan wintering grounds. Tarifa is the best place on the continent to witness this phenomenon.
Why the Strait of Gibraltar?
Birds that cannot cross large bodies of water—such as birds of prey, which rely on continental thermal currents to glide—concentrate at the narrowest points between the two continents. The Strait of Gibraltar, which is barely 14 km wide at its narrowest point, is the natural bottleneck for the entire western migration route.
Migration Statistics
Between August and November, it is estimated that more than one million birds of prey cross the Strait. Among the most common species are:
- European Honey Buzzard: the most abundant species, with up to 400,000 individuals.
- Black Milano: flocks of thousands of birds visible from the coast.
- Booted Eagle: an elegant glider that migrates in large numbers in September.
- White Stork: Their massive formations are one of the most thrilling sights.
- Golden Vulture: giants of the sky that impress everyone who sees them.
Where to Go Birdwatching in Tarifa
The best vantage point is the hill above Los Lances Beach, known as the “Mirador del Estrecho.” The Punto de Tarifa (Isla de las Palomas) and the area around the Punta Carnero lighthouse also offer excellent views. The organization MIGRES It conducts systematic surveys and has volunteers who can guide you.
Tips for Birdwatchers
- Bring binoculars with a magnification of at least 8×42.
- Days with a moderate easterly wind are the best for stargazing.
- Early morning: The first few hours of the morning are the busiest.
