Tarifa's surroundings are much more than beaches and straits. Less than an hour's drive away is one of the most photogenic regions in Spain: the Sierra de Cádiz and its famous route of the white villages. A getaway from The Wind Palace inland reveals a different Andalusia, of mountains and tradition.
Vejer de la Frontera: the closest and the most beautiful
Just 30 km from Tarifa, Vejer is one of the most beautiful villages in Spain. Its cobbled streets, its medieval walls and the dazzling white of its houses make it an almost unreal place. In addition, its gastronomic offer is exceptional for a town of its size.
Zahara de la Sierra: the jewel of the reservoir
At 80 km from Tarifa, this village perched on a cliff overlooking the reservoir of Zahara-El Gastor is one of the most photographed of Andalusia. The climb to the medieval castle is worth the effort.
Grazalema: in the heart of the mountains
The municipality with the most rainfall in the Iberian Peninsula is also one of the most picturesque. Home to the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, it is the perfect starting point for hiking routes through the pinsapares.
Medina Sidonia: the ducal city
A little closer to the coast, Medina Sidonia was the capital of the famous dukes who financed the Invincible Armada. Its historical ensemble, its Roman arches and its famous sweet yolks are reason enough for a visit.
How to organize the excursion
We recommend you dedicate at least one full day to each village, or plan a two-day route that combines several. Renting a car gives you maximum freedom. From El Palacio del Viento we provide you with information about car rental companies in Tarifa.
