Roman ruins of Baelo Claudia: ancient history on the Atlantic shore

Just 22 km from Tarifa, next to the beautiful Bolonia Beach, lie the ruins of Baelo Claudia, one of the best-preserved Roman cities on the Iberian Peninsula. A visit to this archaeological site is one of the most fascinating things you can do from The Wind Palace.

History of Baelo Claudia

Founded in the 2nd century B.C., Baelo Claudia was a prosperous Roman city whose wealth was based on the production of garum, the famous fermented fish sauce that was the most prized condiment in the Roman Empire. It also produced canned tuna, which was exported throughout the Mediterranean.

The city reached its peak in the 1st century A.D., when Emperor Claudius granted it the status of a municipality. Earthquakes, invasions, and shifting trade routes ultimately led to its decline in the 3rd century.

What to See in Baelo Claudia

• The forum: the political and commercial heart of the city, with its partially restored columns.
• The hot springs: Roman public baths, with their underground heating systems.
• The basilica and the churches: three temples dedicated to the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva).
• The brining tanks: where garum was produced. You can still see the original structures.
• The theater: With a capacity of 2,000 spectators, it still retains its cavea.

Practical Information

The site is managed by the Regional Government of Andalusia. Admission is free for EU citizens; there is a modern on-site museum displaying artifacts found during the excavations. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (summer).
