History of Baelo Claudia<\/h2>\n

Founded in the 2nd century B.C., Baelo Claudia was a prosperous Roman city whose wealth was based on the production of garum<\/em>, the famous fermented fish sauce that was the most prized condiment in the Roman Empire. It also produced canned tuna, which was exported throughout the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n

The city reached its peak in the 1st century A.D., when Emperor Claudius granted it the status of a municipality. Earthquakes, invasions, and shifting trade routes ultimately led to its decline in the 3rd century.<\/p>\n

What to See in Baelo Claudia<\/h2>\n

  • The forum<\/strong>: the political and commercial heart of the city, with its partially restored columns.<\/li>\n
  • The hot springs<\/strong>: Roman public baths, with their underground heating systems.<\/li>\n
  • The basilica and the churches<\/strong>: three temples dedicated to the Capitoline Triad (Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva).<\/li>\n
  • The brining tanks<\/strong>: where garum was produced. You can still see the original structures.<\/li>\n
  • The theater<\/strong>: With a capacity of 2,000 spectators, it still retains its cavea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Practical Information<\/h2>\n

    The site is managed by the Regional Government of Andalusia. Admission is free for EU citizens; there is a modern on-site museum displaying artifacts found during the excavations. Hours: Tuesday through Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (summer).<\/p>\n
