Why is the Strait so special?
The meeting of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea creates unique currents and a wealth of nutrients that make these waters a true marine paradise. More than eight species of cetaceans frequent the strait throughout the year.
The species you'll be able to see
- Striped dolphin: the most commonly sighted, with groups of up to hundreds of individuals.
- Bottlenose dolphin: the well-known "TV dolphin," which is larger and more sociable.
- Pilot whale: a year-round resident of the strait.
- Orca: particularly visible between June and September, when it follows the tuna.
- Fin whale: the second-largest whale in the world, visible in spring and winter.
How do I plan the trip?
Several specialized companies, such as FIRMM (Foundation for Information and Research on Marine Mammals) and Turmares, operate out of the port of Tarifa. The tours last between 2 and 3 hours, and prices range from €30 to €40. We recommend booking in advance, especially during peak season.
Practical advice
- Bring some warm clothes: it can get chilly out on the water even if it's hot on land.
- Wear non-slip shoes if you feel dizzy; consult your doctor first.
- The best time is usually early in the morning, when the sea is calmest.
- Don't forget your binoculars and camera.
